I absolutely love this deck, and like I said, it's my FAVORITE. You need a basic understanding of tarot and it's symbols which I feel is best accomplished with the Rider-Waite deck. I own several tarot decks, and this is my absolute favorite one. It is however for the more advanced reader. Do add this one to your collection however.I wouldn't be without it. I get the most accurate reads from this deck. The symbols are simple yet powerful.
The deck is for someone wanting "entertainment" at parties NOT a deck for someone who connects with the true spirit of the tarot. The cards are more abstract where the artist attempts to impress with visual images rather than real life bird images. I have been looking for a tarot deck with birds, ravens or crows in particular as Ravens are familars for me and I have had a family of them at my home for years. In purchasing this deck the picture on the cover and the internet's assessment of "beautiful cards" made me choose this deck. The deck itself was commissioned by a person with "shaman" tendancies which would be good for anyone with native american blood or connections.Upon arrival and looking and "feeling" the deck, it severely lacks "cohesiveness" with me.
I really like the art work, the symbols the artist has included (which make it much easier for me to read), and the way it handles for me. I just ignore 'em. I have over a dozen tarot decks and this one is the only one I use. My only small critique is that there are one or two word "meanings" on each card that don't seem to fit the actualy meaning of the card. It's too bad there is no pictures attached to this item, if people could actually see what the cards looked like, they'd be more apt to purchase the deck. Ever. I'm currently wearing out my third copy of this deck.
Howver, the vivid colors and foreboding, almost post apocalyptic look is possibly better suited for more experienced readers. Every individual must decide for themselves what is appealing to them, but what truly defines an individual is not what, but why, or why not. Digitally enhanced images of wildlife intermixed with different geometric shapes then sprinkled with Astrological symbols, and the truth be told, there is actually very little Tarot here.
In the Minor Arcana the number of the card is represented by the number of objects of that suit, with Coins replacing Pentacles. I have read that the Crow's Magick Deck is sometimes used as a meditation tool to induce psychic dreaming, so if you are drawn to this deck, perhaps a path to your own why has been placed before you. In the Major Arcana Strength is XI and Justice is VIII, trading places from the Rider/Waite/Smith.The Crow's Magick Deck is a mesmerizing mixture of creature and space, color and object, and what I find appealing about this deck is inherent to me.
Created by Londa Marks, this deck has a very otherworldly, magickal feel. It has a nightmarish neutrality of no highs and no lows. The cards contain virtually none of the traditional symbolism, and although each card contains two keywords, which in most cases only scratch the surface of the cards meaning, a good beginners deck this is not.
Many of the animals and objects are simply repeated in different colors, or viewed from different perspectives, for example the same snake appearing with altered color, size and angle, on The Devil, The Universe, Death and the Strength card.It is very much a love it or leave it deck, and I fell into the former category upon initial sight. There isn't any cheerfulness or happiness depicted on The Sun, the Three of Cups, or the Four or Six of Wands, nor is there tragedy or catastrophe depicted on The Tower or the Nine or Ten of Swords.
Evidently no one warned the artist of this deck that inverting a holy symbol, such as Christ upon his Cross from christian belief, is demeaning and defiling of it. There is also a poor choice in the major Arcana for 'The Hanged Man'. While in purely technical terms this is a completely servicable deck in set up- I find the imagery contained therein cold and heartless. I am quite used to abstract art in my tarot cards- but the computer generated imagery followed by the very out-there connections made this a disappointing deck to me for anything but simply reading the minor and major arcana by their basic meanings.
